Payroll Fraud – What it is and Tips on How to Prevent it
We now live in a world where we all have a digital footprint, whether it is banking, buying online, or even sending a letter electronically. With all this digitalization we expect security for everything. Fraud has existed as far as we can tell, even before the digital era. For those who don’t already know, fraud is when “a person or thing intended to deceive others, typically by unjustifiably claiming or being credited with accomplishments or qualities” as defined on Oxford

Payroll Documentation Guidelines
As a business, it is important that you pay your employees both on time and accurately. Employee Rights
Sometimes as employees we don’t know our own rights, and sometimes as employees we don’t fight for our rights even if we know them because we are scared we may lose our jobs. The Relationship Between Employees and Employers and WHY it is Important
When I first started working I was very enthusiastic working for someone, learning the trade and building my skills. But, it soon became apparent that not all employers treated their employees fairly or equally. I quickly realized they were forgetting the value of their employees. I was becoming a number to them and an expendable one as well. After working for several employers, I quit my job and created my own business because I didn’t want to work for someone who didn’t val

Regular Payments, Special Payments and How They Are Taxed Differently When Paid
Not all payments receive the same tax treatment, always ensure you use the appropriate method when calculating withholdings. Salary, wages, overtime, vacation taken, and allowances are examples of a regular payment. Sometimes an irregular or special payment is made to an employee either outside or within the regular pay cycle. Common examples include bonuses, vacation pay (when no time off was taken), retroactive payments, banked overtime, commission payments not regularly pa

Is your T4 accurate, or have you noticed an error? 2018 T4’s have been issued so make sure you have received yours. All your other tax slips will be arriving in the mail as well so keep an eye out as they easily get lost in all the junk mail. A Note About Pay Stubs
Does your pay stub make any sense, or does it simply look like a bunch of numbers? There are minimum requirements when it comes to what is displayed on your pay stub or earnings statement, the other information is simply there for you and the company you work for so errors can be found or calculated. Some have a layout that is easy to follow, while others are messy and hard to understand. If you find yourself in this situation, you are not alone. The best advice I can offer i

Would You Eat a Hamburger Without Fries?
No, of course not, that wouldn’t make any sense. Please allow me to stop you there, before you start talking about being a vegetarian, gluten intolerant, paleo, keto, vegan, or any other diet restrictions you may have or follow, just stick to the fundamentals; hamburgers and fries are meant to be on the same plate. So now that we agree, eating a hamburger without the fries doesn’t make any sense; processing your own payroll doesn’t make any sense either. Look at it this way.

Refunds of Saskatchewan PST in 2018
If you remember the new provincial sales tax that Saskatchewan introduced late in 2017 for insurance premiums, which was short lived, as of February 26, 2018 provincial sales tax was eliminated and it extended retroactively.
