Bill C-15 Canada Emergency Student Benefit Act (CESB)

On May 1, 2020, Bill C-15 Canada Emergency Student Benefit Act received Royal Assent, having passed with no amendments to the third reading. Click here to view the Bill.

The Bill will allow students who


a) are enrolled between December 1, 2019 and August 31, 2020, in a post-secondary education program that leads to a degree, diploma or certificate or;


b) have graduated from secondary school in 2020 and applied for enrollment in a post-secondary education program scheduled to begin before February 1, 2021 and plans to enroll providing their application is accepted;


to apply for financial relief for reasons related to COVID-19. Students will not be able to file an application after September 30, 2020.


Students will be eligible for the Canada Emergency Student Benefit (CESB) if they are an employee or in self-employment and unable to work, are looking for work and are unable to find it, are currently working but are paid less than the amount prescribed under the regulations for reasons related to the coronavirus disease 2019 during the four-week period for which they are applying for the benefit.


Please remember you will require a 'My Account' to apply for the CESB. Make sure to have yours set up ahead of time. Here is a quick video released by the CRA.


Students or recent grads that have never filed income tax will have one more step to create your 'My Account'. Your extra step will involve activating your SIN.
